Size: Approximately 15 mms long

Description

A click-beetle - uses a trick catch on its back as a self-righting mechanism and to escape from danger.The resulting click gives them their name.s. The special hinge on the thorax, operates when the body is arched createing tension like a coiled spring. The tension can be released, causing the beetle to propel into the air at a speed of more than 2 metres per second: elytra slightly reddish, antenna all black

Larvae are "wireworms" and may damage potato crops, but also feed on rotting wood

There are aprox 65 different species of click beetle in the Britain

Observed

May to August.

Food:

The larvae feed on roots and can become a pest of root crops.

Habitat:

Found in hedgerows and meadows.
